Why positioning is the campaign's foundation
Content, SEO, ads, email, social - every session after this one is just a channel carrying a message. Get the message wrong and you scale noise; get it right and every channel compounds. AI makes producing messages nearly free, which makes choosing the right one the entire job. Tonight you build Cadence's positioning, then feel exactly what sharpening it does in the simulator.
Positioning that lands 6 min live
A strong message is not clever wording - it is the right five ingredients, in order: a specific person, the job they are trying to do, the value you create, the proof, and a clear offer. AI can draft the words in seconds; only you can choose the target. Anatomy first, words second.
LiveICP and job-to-be-done - the two you must not outsource3 min▶
AI will happily write for "everyone". That is the failure mode. Your judgement picks the ICP (the specific person whose problem you solve best) and the job to be done (what they are hiring your product to accomplish). Get those two right and the value, proof, and offer almost write themselves.
- ICP is a person, not a demographic. "Consultants in back-to-back client calls" beats "professionals aged 25-45".
- Job-to-be-done is their goal, not your feature. "Never lose a decision between meetings" beats "automatic transcription".
- Cadence has two ICPs, two motions. The solo professional (self-serve, B2C-style) and the team lead who buys for a group (B2B). Same product, two messages - and this session builds both.
The rewrite that 3x'd reply rates. A team's outbound said "we help businesses work smarter". Reframed to one ICP and one job - "we help consultancies stop losing billable decisions in back-to-back calls" - the same product, same channel, tripled replies. Nothing changed but the target. That is positioning doing the heavy lifting AI cannot.
Self-studyValue, proof, offer - where AI earns its keep2 min read▶
Once the target is set, AI is genuinely great at drafting the rest - fast, in volume, in your voice:
| Ingredient | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Value | The outcome in their words ("walk out of every meeting with decisions captured") |
| Proof | Real evidence you supply - a number, a customer, a demo. Never invented. |
| Offer | The concrete next step: free solo plan, book a team demo, start a trial. |
Rail one lives here: the proof must be real. AI drafts the sentence; you supply and verify the evidence.
Drive it yourself: watch the message land ★ 8 min · everyone plays
Here is the whole lesson in one control panel. The AI is drafting Cadence's positioning message. Every lever you turn on sharpens it - define the ICP, add the pain and proof, clarify the offer, fit the channel, apply the brand voice. Watch message-market fit climb and flip to the scorecard to see how many of the three audience segments actually resonate. Notice what never moves the needle: a bigger model.
Build Cadence's positioning - both motions ★ 12 min · everyone builds
Now do it for real, in your chat tool, for both Cadence audiences. This is the positioning you will carry into every later session.
Give the AI the five-ingredient frame and Cadence's real facts (from b1's brief). Ask it to draft positioning for the solo professional first.
Then ask for the team lead (B2B) version - same product, different job (managing a team's decisions, not just their own). Notice how value and offer shift.
Add the guardrail: "use only the proof I gave you; mark any claim you cannot support with [need source]". Keep it honest (rail one).
Pressure-test each with the simulator's lens: is the ICP specific, the pain real, the offer clear? Tighten until both would score high.
Save both as your Cadence positioning doc. b3-b9 all pull from it.
Three variants, one clear winner ★ 8 min · build your own
AI's real superpower in positioning is cheap variety. Generate options, then judge them with the message-market-fit lens instead of by gut.
Ask for three distinct positioning angles for the solo motion - e.g. speed, never-lose-a-decision, and look-prepared. Same facts, different emphasis.
Score each against the simulator's levers: which has the sharpest ICP, clearest pain, most concrete offer? Rank them.
Have the AI combine the strongest ICP + pain + offer into one refined message, then edit it into your brand voice.
Write one sentence on WHY the winner won. That reasoning is what you will reuse to judge content, ads, and emails later.
Variety is the point. A PMM used to labour over one positioning statement for days. Now they generate ten in minutes and spend the saved time on the judgement that matters - which target, which job, which proof. The work moved from writing to deciding. That is AI leverage done right.
Try it yourself - this week ◐ 30-45 min total
- Finish both Cadence positioning motions and save them as your reference doc for the rest of the track.
- Play the simulator again and predict the fit score before each toggle - predicting it means you understand what drives resonance.
- Run the positioning prompt on your own product or one you admire. Bring the sharpest ICP you land on to b3.
- Rewrite one piece of your current copy that talks to "everyone" so it talks to one person. Note what changed.
- Optional: draft a one-line brand-voice rule (e.g. "warm, plain, never hypey") - b3 uses it constantly.

Three questions before you go 🎯 ◐ 90 seconds
1 · In the simulator, what makes the message finally resonate with all three segments?
Fit comes from sharpening the message, not from model size. A message aimed at everyone reaches no one.
2 · Which two positioning ingredients should you never outsource to AI?
AI drafts value, proof, and offer well - but you must choose the specific target and the job. Those decisions are the leverage.
3 · What is AI's real superpower in positioning?
AI makes options nearly free, moving your work from writing to deciding. It never invents proof - that is rail one.
